Tajweed or Tajweed Fil Qur’an is an Arabic word meaning elocution or pronunciation in the context of speaking the words by heart.

It is the art of pronunciation, from a linguistic point of view, and an artistic one. Linguistically it is defined as the science that deals with the rules governing pronunciation of words in the Qur’an. It comprises the definition of letters/vowels and their combinations, diacritical marks (حروف القافية), recitation (اذان و خطبة) and the laws of eloquence in reciting Qur’an. The term Tajweed is also used to refer to proper enunciation when reciting Qur’an.

From an artistic point of view, it is defined as “the art of reciting Qur’an beautifully with correct pronunciation, intonation, and Tajweed so that the listener is moved by the beauty of recitation.

Recitation implies reading aloud at normal speed or slightly faster while retaining correctness in pronunciation, intonation, and correct use of Tajweed.

The importance of vowel markings in Arabic

The importance of vowel markings in Arabic

One often reads about the importance of learning Arabic. One reason is that it is the language of the Qur’an, which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad saw. The other reason is that Arabic has a beautiful script and an interesting morphology; i.e., verbs are formed with letters at the beginning, middle, and end of words. These are some reasons why the language is considered to be difficult for non-native speakers.

Short Vowels

There are three short vowels in Arabic: fatHa, kasra, and damma. The first two symbols are used with an alif ا (‘). When they stand alone, they are pronounced like a short ‘e’ sound. When they are connected to other letters, they have their regular pronunciations.

The third symbol is only used with the letter د (). It has a ‘u’ sound when it stands alone or at the beginning of a word. If it appears elsewhere, it usually changes the pronunciation of what follows it.

It is helpful for non-native speakers to know how each word is pronounced because if they do not, they might never be able to reproduce the language accurately. However, many Arabians will speak Arabic correctly even without the use of vowel markings. This is because Arabs memorize their speech rather than write it down.
